Fishing the Lim: fly fishing one of the most beautiful rivers

June 02, 2026Haul

The Lim rises from Lake Plav in Montenegro and runs about 220 kilometres through Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to its mouth on the Drina. Fast, cold and remarkably clear, it is a classic salmonid river — less known and less crowded than the Drina, which makes it ideal for anglers seeking quiet fishing in untouched nature.

This guide gives you the basics: which species you'll target, when, where to start, and which technique to use.

Species you'll be targeting

The Lim is a salmonid water with a healthy stock:

  • Grayling — the fly angler's main target, especially in the middle course
  • Brown trout — the native species of the fast, cold stretches
  • Huchen (Danube salmon) — present in the lower course, strictly protected
  • Chub, nase and barbel — in the warmer, slower sections downstream

Best seasons

PeriodMost active
Spring (Apr–May)Trout as the season opens
Summer (Jun–Aug)Grayling on the dry fly, the best window
Autumn (Sep–Oct)Big grayling before the season closes
WinterSalmonids closed; huchen under special rules

Summer is the peak of the grayling season. On warm evenings the fish feed hard at the surface — ideal for the dry fly.

Access stretches

  • Prijepolje — the central zone, easily reached banks and a good grayling stock
  • Brodarevo — upstream, clear fast water, excellent for trout
  • Priboj — wider sections with a mix of species
  • The lower course toward the Drina — warmer water, chub, nase and barbel

The middle course around Prijepolje is considered the most productive for grayling throughout the season.

Techniques and tackle

For grayling and trout, fly fishing is the first choice: dry fly on summer evenings, nymphs when the fish won't take from the surface. A light rod and fine tippet are a must for the clear Lim water.

For huchen, anglers use lures with large baits, but strictly within the special rules and, where required, catch-and-release.

Tip: the Lim can rise and colour up sharply after mountain rain. The best fishing is when the water settles and clears — that's when grayling take most freely.

Permits and closed seasons

Like other salmonid waters, the Lim has special permits and stretches with "fly only" or "catch and release" rules. Check the conditions with the operator of the fishing area before heading out.

Huchen is strictly protected — check its current status before any attempt. Respect the closed season and prescribed sizes for trout and grayling, and return fish to the water carefully.

Quick summary

The Lim is a hidden gem for fly anglers — clear water, a rich grayling stock, and a peace that's hard to find on better-known rivers. With respect for the rules and a little patience, the Lim offers some of the finest fishing days in Serbia.
