Fishing the Velika Morava: a guide to species, seasons and stretches
The Velika Morava forms where the Western and Southern Morava meet near Stalać, then runs about 185 kilometres to its mouth on the Danube near Smederevo. It is a classic lowland river — slow, wide and silty, full of side channels, gravel bars and undercut banks. That variety is exactly what makes it one of Serbia's richest fishing waters, rewarding for predator anglers and bottom fishermen alike.
If you're getting to know the river, this guide gives you the basics: which species you'll target, when they're most active, where to start, and which technique to use.
Species you'll be targeting
The Velika Morava is known first of all for catfish (wels) — big fish are no rarity, especially in the deeper pools and under undercut banks. Beyond catfish, the river holds:
- Zander — a prized predator, best in autumn and early winter
- Pike — along side channels and overgrown banks, aggressive on lures
- Barbel — a Morava classic, fished on the bottom in riffles and runs
- Carp and Prussian carp — in the calmer sections and backwaters
- Chub and nase — active throughout the warm season
- Bream and perch — great for lighter, relaxed sessions
Best seasons
| Period | Most active |
|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Barbel, chub, nase; zander after spawning |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Catfish (night fishing), carp, Prussian carp |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Zander and pike in full swing |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Predators on milder days, bream |
Summer belongs to catfish — most active at night and in the early morning hours when they feed in shallower water. Autumn is the golden window for predators: as the water cools and clears, zander and pike feed hard before winter.
Access stretches
The Velika Morava is accessible along its whole course. Some of the most popular stretches:
- Ćuprija and Jagodina — easily reached banks, good for barbel and predators
- Bagrdan — a gorge section with faster flow, excellent for barbel
- Velika Plana and Žabari — wide sections with pools, prime catfish territory
- Ljubičevo and Smederevo (mouth) — the junction with the Danube, big fish and a mix of species
Watch for undercut banks and bends — that's where the deepest pools and the best catfish lies are.
Techniques and tackle
For catfish, the most productive approaches are night fishing with a clonk, livebaiting, and classic deep bottom fishing with worms or larvae. Use stronger tackle — the Morava can produce serious fish.
For zander and pike, go with lures: twisters, crankbaits and soft baits on a jig head. Work the bait slowly, right along the bottom — zander strike low.
For barbel, the classic is feeder or bottom fishing with worms and larvae, on faster runs and at the tail of riffles where the water slows.
For carp, use boilies and sweetcorn in the calmer backwaters and slack water.
Tip: the Morava carries silt after rain and rises and colours up quickly. After heavy rainfall, wait a day or two for the water to clear — the fishing is noticeably better then.
Permits and closed seasons
To fish the Velika Morava you need a valid annual or daily permit. Before heading out, check current prices and conditions with the local angling association or the Angling Federation of Serbia, as stretches can differ by operator.
Always respect the closed season for individual species and the prescribed minimum sizes — dates change from year to year, so check the current rulebook before the season. Return undersized fish and treat the water responsibly.
Quick summary
The Velika Morava rewards patience and anglers who read the water. Big catfish in the pools through summer, zander and pike in autumn, barbel across the whole warm season — with the right stretch and technique, you'll rarely go home empty-handed.
